(CNN)At least eight nursing home residents have died in Hollywood, Florida, according to city officials.

The deaths may be due to the loss of the home’s air-conditioning after Hurricane Irma struck Sunday, according to CNN affiliate WPLG. The causes of death are still being investigated, Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez said.

“We are conducting a criminal investigation (and) not ruling anything out at this time,” Sanchez said at a press conference Wednesday.

A statement from the nursing home, the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, confirmed that it had a “prolonged power failure to the transformer which powered the facility’s air conditioning system as a result of the hurricane.”

Temperatures reached into the 90s Tuesday and Wednesday in Hollywood.

“I am going to aggressively demand answers on how this tragic event took place,” Florida Governor Rick Scott said in a statement.

Scott’s statement said Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration and the Department of Children and Families have launched investigations.

“If they find that this facility was not meeting the state’s high standards of care, they will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Scott’s statement said.

The facility reported yesterday that its fans and spot coolers were in working order, and that it had power, according to the statement.

“Parts of the facility itself were energized” by Florida Power and Light, according to the company’s communications director, Rob Gould. “Can’t give you anything more specific than that at this point.”

Hospital administrators were told to dial 911 if they believed anyone was at risk, the governor’s statement said.

“The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills is responsible for the safety of their patients,” the statement said.

“We’re certainly all very disappointed that something like this could’ve taken place,” Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy told CNN. “Unfortunately, emergency services were called obviously too late.”

The nursing home has had a list of safety violations and citations, including two for not following generator regulations in 2014 and 2016. In both instances, the nursing home corrected these deficiencies.

Patients evacuated to hospitals

Three died at the nursing home, and the rest died after being evacuated to Memorial Healthcare System facilities, city officials said. Memorial Regional Hospital is yards away from the nursing home.

Firefighters evacuated 115 people from the nursing home. Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Story said there were “a number of critical patients.”

“Most of the patients have been treated for respiratory distress, dehydration and heat-related issues,” Dr. Randy Katz, the medical director of Memorial Regional’s emergency department, said at a press conference.

Another 18 patients in an adjacent behavioral health facility are also being evacuated, Story said. As a precautionary measure, police are checking the other 42 nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the city of Hollywood, Sanchez said.

The hospital has set up a hotline, 954-265-1074, so that families of nursing home residents can check on their loved ones.

“The loss of these individuals is a profound tragedy,” said a statement by the Florida Health Care Association, which represents 81% of Florida’s nursing centers. They do not, however, represent the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills.

“Approximately 150 facilities out of the nearly 700 (nursing) facilities in the state do not currently have full power services restored,” the statement said. The association added that it is working with state officials to identify homes without power so that utility companies could prioritize those in greatest need.

Police also started evacuating 79 residents of another nursing home in North Miami Beach on Wednesday, citing similar safety concerns about lack of air conditioning. Police used city trolleys as one way to transport residents of the Krystal Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to a new facility, according to public information officer Brian Andrews.

There are 683 nursing homes in Florida with over 84,000 beds, according to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, which licenses and regulates these facilities. In addition, there are more than 3,100 assisted living facilities with over 99,000 beds.

Nanoparticles from tattoos circulate inside the body, study finds

Translocation of tattoo particles from skin to lymph nodes. Upon injection of tattoo inks, particles can be either passively transported via blood and lymph fluids or phagocytized by immune cells and subsequently deposited in regional lymph nodes. After healing, particles are present in the dermis and in the sinusoids of the draining lymph nodes. Credit: Christian Seim

The elements that make up the ink in tattoos travel inside the body in micro and nanoparticle forms and reach the lymph nodes, according to a study published in Scientific Reports on 12 September by scientists from Germany and the ESRF, the European Synchrotron, Grenoble (France). It is the first time researchers have found analytical evidence of the transport of organic and inorganic pigments and toxic element impurities as well as in depth characterization of the pigments ex vivo in tattooed tissues. Two ESRF beamlines were crucial in this breakthrough.

“When someone wants to get a tattoo, they are often very careful in choosing a parlour where they use sterile needles that haven’t been used previously. No one checks the chemical composition of the colours, but our study shows that maybe they should,” explains Hiram Castillo, one of the authors of the study and scientist at the ESRF.

The reality is that little is known about the potential impurities in the colour mixture applied to the skin. Most tattoo inks contain organic pigments, but also include preservatives and contaminants like nickel, chromium, manganese or cobalt. Besides carbon black, the second most common ingredient used in tattoo inks is titanium dioxide (TiO2), a white pigment usually applied to create certain shades when mixed with colorants. TiO2 is also commonly used in food additives, sunscreens and paints. Delayed healing, along with skin elevation and itching, are often associated with white tattoos, and by consequence with the use of TiO2.

μ-XRF mapping identifies and locates tattoo particle elements in skin and lymph node tissue sections. Sections of skin and lymph node tissue from donor 4 were analyzed by means of synchrotron μ-XRF. a) Visible light microscopy (VLM) images of the area mapped by μ-XRF. Tattoo pigments are indicated by a red arrow. b) DAPI staining of adjacent sections showing the cell nuclei. c) μ-XRF maps of P, Ti, Cl and/or Br. For the lymph node, areas of similar size are marked in a) and b). d) Average μ-XRF spectra over the full area displayed in c) * = diffraction peak from sample support; ** = scatter peak of the incoming beam. e) Ti K-edge μ-XANES spectra of skin and lymph node compared to transmission XANES spectra of reference material of rutile, anatase and an 80/20 rutile/anatase mixture calculation. The hazards that potentially derive from tattoos were previously known only by chemical analysis of the inks and their degradation products in vitro. “We already knew that pigments from tattoos would travel to the lymph nodes because of visual evidence. The lymph nodes become tinted with the colour of the tattoo. It is the response of the body to clean the site of entrance of the tattoo. What we didn’t know is that they do it in a nano form, which implies that they may not have the same behaviour as the particles at a micro level. And that is the problem—we don’t know how nanoparticles react,” says Bernhard Hesse, one of the two first authors of the study and ESRF visiting scientist.

X-ray fluorescence measurements on ID21 allowed the team to locate titanium dioxide at the micro and nano range in the skin and the lymphatic environment. They found a broad range of particles up to several micrometres in size in human skin, but only smaller (nano) particles were transported to the lymph nodes. This may lead to the chronic enlargement of the lymph node and lifelong exposure. Scientists also used the technique of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to assess biomolecular changes in the tissues in the proximity of the tattoo particles.

The scientists report strong evidence for both migration and long-term deposition of toxic elements and tattoo pigments, as well as for conformational alterations of biomolecules that are sometimes linked to cutaneous inflammation and other adversities upon tattooing. The next step for the team is to inspect more subjects with adverse effects from tattoos in order to find links with chemical and structural properties of the pigments used to create their tattoos.

Looters’ paradise? Lawlessness reportedly rampant in Caribbean islands devastated by Hurricane Irma.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/09/12/looters-paradise-lawlessness-reportedly-rampant-in-caribbean-islands-devastated-by-hurricane-irma.html

Business owners on one of the Caribbean islands ravaged by Hurricane Irma say the government needs to send in the Marines — literally — and increase patrols to combat the thieves and looters running rampant at Sint Maarten’s shopping destination.

Elsewhere on the island, men armed with guns and machetes are terrorizing residents and tourists alike, while some wait on piers to steal the bounty of boats and ships carrying aid to the devastated community.

We can’t sleep in peace because of the thieves,” Yovanny Roque, 48, said.

Residents of the small island – divided in the 17th century into the French territory of Saint-Martin and the Dutch territory of Sint Maarten – say they have to hide inside their homes and in makeshift shelters as night falls, fearful of robbers roaming the streets.

On Frontstreet, a shopping destination for the thousands of tourists who arrive via cruise ships each year, looters broke into a customs office and stole arms, according to reports.

Anthea Turner, a tourism and cruise expert who has worked with business owners on St. Martin for more than 19 years, told Fox News on Tuesday that looters were going storefront to storefront stealing all they could.

The Caribbean tourist destination has been working its way out of the wreckage heaped on it last week by Irma, churning as a full Category 5 storm when it blasted the island. Cars lie tossed upside down, large boats lean sideways on dry land and debris from businesses and homes fill the streets.

Some say the destruction is on a “biblical scale.”

Reports of rampant looting broke just hours after the devastating storm.

Massimiliano Napoliello, the manager at a bar at Sonesta Maho Resort, wrote on Facebook over the weekend: “The situation in SXM is a HELL!!!”

They are completely isolated and there are CRIMINALS carrying GUNS AND KNIVES SHOOTING and looting all over! NOTHING IS WORKING, THERE ARE NO RULES, THERE IS NO LAW AND NO PROTECTION RIGHT NOW

More than 1,200 American citizens have been evacuated from the island. The United States does not have a consulate on St. Martin, making it difficult to gather information about Americans still on the island.

In response to growing unrest, French and Dutch police have sent extra officers and military personnel to St. Martin to help contain looking. About 1,500 French troops, police and emergency workers are already on the ground and 500 others are expected to arrive in the coming days, French authorities said.

Turner said things have gotten slightly better since the days directly following the storm, however, looters still have more control of the streets than the police.

Shocking Video Shows Cop Shooting Another Cop 9 Times As He Mistakes Him For A Suspect

http://www.nmws.us/shocking-video-shows-cop-shooting-another-cop-9-times-as-he-mistakes-him-for-a-suspect/.WbjwRy595no.twitter

The moment an Albuquerque lieutenant realized he mistook an undercover cop for a suspect in a drug bust and shot him nine times, he shrieked, “I didn’t know it was you … I thought you were a bad guy,” startling new video shows.

Lt. Greg Brachle got out of a pick-up truck, approached a black car with tinted windows and, when the person he thought was a suspect opened one of the rear doors, he repeatedly fired off his gun, the shocking lapel cam footage released by the City of Albuquerque shows.

The man turned out to be undercover detective Jacob Grant, 38, who wasn’t wearing body armor at the time of the January 2015 nearly fatal mix-up—he lost 80% of the blood in his body and suffered injuries to all of his major organs.

I’m sorry!” Brachle frantically screams, before he yells out a string of expletives: “Oh s–t that was Jacob!” Holy s–t it’s Jacob! F— me!”

Are you okay?” Brachle asked the wounded cop, to which he responds: “No.”

Brachle retired after the Police Oversight Agency recommended that he be fired.

The video was released the day after the city of Albuquerque, N.M., shelled out $6.5 million to Grant in a settlement.

Grant has undergone multiple surgeries and has been in and out of the hospital since the incident, according to local network KOAT.

The city also agreed to pick up his medical expenses for the rest of his life and he’ll be given medical retirement.

My family and I wish to express our profound gratitude to the community, my fellow APD officers, Chief (Gordon) Eden and my medical staff,” Grant said.

Grant’s family received numerous donations, which will now be set aside for other injured officers and charities, KOAT reported.

The Police Oversight Agency said Brachle made several clumsy mistakes that resulted in the nearly lethal shooting.

Brachle had not attended a briefing for the drug bust, but responded to it anyway when he heard it was happening, according to KOAT.

Brachle, who had responded to hundreds of drug busts, should have also been tipped off to who Grant was based on where he was sitting — in the back seat, behind the driver — the agency said.

It is standard operating procedure that a cop drives a bust car as his partner sits behind him for safety.

It should have been evident to Brachle where Grant was in that car,” Edward Harness, executive director of the Police Oversight Agency, told KOAT.

Brachle was involved in another shooting in 1998, when he shot a man who was leaving his house with his arms in the air after Brachle responded to reports of a dispute — the man survived and filed suit.

Microscope Invented At Marine Biological Laboratory Illuminates Chromosomal ‘Dark Matter’

WOODS HOLE, MASS.– Using a microscope invented at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), a collaborative team of biologists, instrument developers, and computational scientists has for the first time measured the density of a relatively inscrutable, highly condensed form of chromosomal material that appears in the cells of human beings and other eukaryotes. MBL scientists Michael Shribak (the microscope’s inventor) and Tomomi Tani, together with Kazuhiro Maeshima of the National Institute of Genetics, Japan, recently reported their findings in Molecular Biology of the Cell.

The scientists measured the density of heterochromatin, a tightly packed form of chromatin that appears as dark, scattered regions in the cell nucleus. Until recently, this chromosomal “dark matter” was thought to contain either noncoding DNA or silenced genes; however, new research suggests that heterochromatin DNA is not, in fact, fully inactive. To investigate this possibility, the physical properties of heterochromatin need to be described in live cells, which has been a significant challenge using traditional microscopy. The team was able to measure the density of heterochromatin in its natural state using a novel type of microscopy, orientation-independent differential interference contrast (OI-DIC), which Shribak first developed in collaboration with MBL Distinguished Scientist Shinya Inoué in the mid-2000s and has continued to improve.

This study, Shribak said, is “the first important application of OI-DIC,” a technology that “is ideal for studying structure and motion in unstained, living cells and isolated organelles, because they can be followed for long periods of time non-invasively.”

“This research exemplifies the kind of successful and productive interaction between biologists, microscope developers, and data scientists that is a central feature of MBL science, and is a major area of growth at the MBL,” said David Mark Welch, director of the Marine Biological Laboratory Division of Research.

Widely used by biologists since the 1970s, conventional DIC microscopy uses beam-shearing interference to generate contrast-based images of live, unmodified cells and tissues. In the early 1980s at MBL, Shinya Inoué and Robert and Nina Allen of Dartmouth College independently invented video-enhanced DIC, which drastically improved the technique and its resolution. However, DIC suffered still from the drawback that the scientist had to rotate the biological sample several times to get a complete image, because cellular structures along the beam-shearing plane are invisible. In 2002, Shribak proposed orientation-independent DIC (U.S. patents 7233434 and 7564618), which solved the problem. The OI-DIC microscope rapidly takes images in different beam-shear directions, then processes a final image. It has the added advantage over conventional DIC of allowing quantitative measurement of the sample.

Last summer, Thomas Rhines, a University of Chicago student studying with Shribak as a Jeff Metcalf Undergradate Scholar, developed a method to measure the resolution of optical microscopes, focusing particularly on the OI-DIC. “This microscope provides the best possible resolution and contrast [of DIC microscopes],” Shribak said (about 250 nm at highest resolution). Rhines and Shribak will continue to collaborate to develop the best algorithm for data analysis of resolution. Shribak is also collaborating with MBL Fellow Patrick La Rivière of the University of Chicago to develop a 3D orientation-independent DIC system.

Based on screenshots of his chat, it appears as if Jason Kessler, the organizer of the Alt Right rally in Charlottesville knew that white supremacists who attended were going to drive a car into protesters and kill people.

Alt-Right Leader Jason Kessler Watched While Car Attacks Were Planned on His Server

Kessler’s recruits openly discussed using cars as weapons to “exterminate” protesters.

Jason Kessler, former Occupy Wall Street coordinator and confirmed leftist provocateur, ran a Discord server where white supremacists discussed armed attacks and running protesters over with vehicles.

Here is a screenshot from the Discord server that James Kessler (MadDimension) ran. In the upper right corner, you can see that he is logged in and is moderating the chat, while they plan.

One member, “AltCelt(IL)” posted a picture of a large bus, running over people in a crowd. He then stated:

This will be us.”

In the next shot, another member, “Tyrone” said:

I know NC law is on the books that driving over protesters blocking roadways isn’t an offense. This is crossover for this channel and VA law.”

Sure would be nice.” He then posted a picture of a large harvester tractor, which he called a “John Deere Protester Digester”.

It is quite clear that Jason Kessler (MadDimension) stood by and said nothing when an act of terrorism was been discussed on his server. Here he is actively jumping in and moderating two of his recruits that were fighting in the chat room:

Organizations that were instructed to attend the chats and to take orders from Jason Kessler and “Eli Mosely” were Identity Europa, Traditionalist Worker Party, & Vanguard America.

Alleged terrorist James Fields Jr. held rank in the white supremacist group Vanguard America, and was photographed wearing their uniform, carrying their shield, and participating in the rally with them, shortly before the he allegedly used his car in a terrorist attack which claimed one dead and nineteen seriously injured.

It is unknown if Fields was logged into the chat room when the car attacks were discussed, but “Vanguard America”, Field’s group, was logged into Kessler’s server while he coordinated with them.

An Ohio white supremacist named “Gustavschwer-OH”, from Ohio, was logged in and confirmed that he would attend Kessler’s rally, while Kessler was logged in.

Another member, “Kurt14Lipper” called for the “extinction” of the protesters.

Here is what we know:

Jason Kessler and Richard Spencer encouraged white supremacists from all over the country to cross state lines with weapons in order to intimidate the residents of Charlottesville.

Jason Kessler moderated a chat room on the Discord server that he set up for the event. He watched while his white supremacist recruits openly discussed using vehicles as weapons in order to “exterminate” protesters. He did nothing, but he did jump in when some members got into a little scuffle over something minor.

How these people are allowed to laugh and joke about their actions on Twitter, while asking their followers for donations because they feel that their “civil rights” were violated by the police is beyond belief.

Jason Kessler, Richard Spencer, Christopher Cantwell, Eli Mosley and all of those who recruited for, planned and organized this event need to be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

What is Jason Kessler’s response to all of this? Is he now showing any responsibility for his actions, or showing the least bit of remorse? I will let him answer in his own words…..
